Alex Swines

Alex Swines has created a 'Sea Chair' from all the plastic that is floating in the sea around the world. You can see on this image the blue areas is where all the rubbish in the sea collects together.

Then Alex collects pieces of plastic that are washed up on the shore....

Then he grinds it all down into a liquid form...

And this is the outcome. I think its actually a beautiful piece of furniture and very economic. Why not create pieces of furniture from the rubbish thats around the world?!

More of Berlin...

Today as a group we went to the Laing art gallery in Newcastle to check out an exhibition. It was by Nick Kennedy and was called Timecasting. It was actually very relaxing to me and very unusual. It was basically a clock mechanism with grafite on the ends of the ticker which gently brushed against the paper and created a design. It reminded me of when I was younger and used to draw with spirograph.

I went on an educational trip to Berlin. It was so laid back and totally cool. We went on a Alternative tour which showed us the different street artists and old buildings. Here are some images of my trip...

I have recently started a placement at Urban Outfitters working with the display artist. A display artist makes sure that the shop is looking good and everything is top notch! This was a piece of work I applied on the walls with black tape. The theme at the moment in Urban Outfitters is a lot of grids and graph paper. I had to measure the scale of where the grids would go and then apply the tape making sre there were no bubbles, lumpy bits etc.. I think it looks really cool and I thoroughly enjoyed creating it. I would love a job as a display artist as I feel that its something that customers kind of take for granted they dont expect to see someone actually hands and knees on the floor creating art in stores.
(Fingers crossed!)

helena serget

Helena Serget came into Newcastle College this week, (13/03/13) and talked about her life so far as an artist. When Helena first graduated she became a theatre wardrobe dresser. She worked with a lot of famous people and met John Galliano, the famous fashion designer. She then thought she would study advertising and ended up working alongside Saatchi and Saatchi. She then went travelling and ended up entering a competition for the company Droog. Helena won this competition and her work to design a tshirt was manufactured. She went back a year later and her work was up on display in the shop. The next part of Helena's life she told us was her pet rat Tony Blair, she said she loved him and he was an artist rat not just a pet. This was so funny when she was telling us and here are some images of the work her pet rat tony made....
